Below are the most common and useful sources of information about viruses and hoaxes. Check these out before getting excited about chain mail that people send you!
Federal Government
Federal Citizen Information Center, lists scams and hoaxes concerning computers (as well as others).
US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), may have information about security problems with common software.
Hoaxbusters, run by the Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC), supported by the Department of Energy and the University of California.
Anti-Virus Manufacturers
These usually know what is a problem, and stay on top of them. They sell anti-virus software, which everyone should have, and also have virus removal information.

Snopes, aka Urban Legends Reference Pages, a great source for checking out hoaxes; almost everything that has gone around the block can be found here.
