SMTP 550 Error
The user assumes all risks associated with these instructions.
The Problem
This problem occurs when you are using Outlook or Outlook Express and you are trying to send mail to an account that is not part of your ISP's network. For example, you might be using ISPONLINE.NET as your ISP, and if you send e-mail to an account on that network, such as MY_FRIEND@ISPONLINE.NET, it is sent successfully. However, if you try to send e-mail to an account not on that network, such as MY_FRIEND@HOTMAIL.COM, then you may get the following message:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server.
The rejected e-mail address was 'anemail@anisp.net', Subject: 'Re: Whatever,',
Account: 'mail.yourisp.net', Server: 'mail.yourisp.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '550 not local host anisp.net, not a gateway', Port 25,
Secure (SSL): no, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79.
Some servers won't allow you to send mail unless you "authenticate" the e-mail. This is handled automatically by Outlook or Outlook Express when you change your settings.
The Solution
The same fix described below will work for Windows 98 and Windows XP.
To fix the problem, while in Outlook or Outlook Express, select "Tools" from the main toolbar. Then select "Accounts" from the drop-down menu. The "Internet Accounts" window will appear. The window below has the "Mail" panel displayed. If the "Mail" panel is not displayed on your computer, click on the "Mail" tab at the top of the window.

If it is not checked, click the checkbox next to "My server requires authentication" under the "Outgoing Mail Server" heading. Then click "OK" and close the window. Click "Close" on the "Internet Accounts" window to close it.
Exit out of Outlook or Outlook Express, and restart the program. You do not need to restart the computer.
