What Are Multimedia Presentations?
Multimedia presentations are anything that use video and/or sound.
Multimedia presentations usually require a plug-in to be installed on the user's desktop in order for them to run. See Implementing Rule M for information on plug-in requirements.
What Are Equivalent Alternatives?
The key word is "synchronized". This means that the equivalent alternative needs to play along with the original multimedia presentation.
For presentations containing speech, captions synchronized with the video are required. The captions need to capture the speech. The speed of display of the captions (and the presentation) needs to be under the user's control. The captions need to be capable of being adjusted by the user for optimal viewability. In some cases, further explanation of the video may be required, if information contained in the images cannot be deduced from the speech.
In some cases, it may not be possible to synchronize an equivalent alternative with a multimedia presentation. In these cases, Rule (k) applies. (See Implementing Rule K).
Initializing Multimedia
Multimedia should not automatically play, unless the user has actually selected an option to activate it after being informed of what will happen, and after being presented with alternate choices for obtaining the information (e.g., a transcript).
Example:
- Video of Whatever (size)
- Text Transcript of Whatever
