Iris Mars
Maryland Native Plant Society Web Site
(Version 2)
When I started volunteering, the original web site had a main page consisting mostly of links to other organizations' sites. Additional pages had no navigation beyond using the "back" button. Initially, I offered to add new sections to the site: chapters and plant survey data. The opportunity for a redesign presented itself and I explored several redesigns with the webmaster before settling on the one below. Later on, I assumed full responsibility for managing the web site's content.
At the time of this design, many of the members used dial-up to access the Internet. Simplicity and compactness of design was essential to maintain a reasonable level of performance.
I performed the following activities:
- designed a new page layout for the major units of the site;
- developed chapter pages;
- developed survey data pages;
- coded the site to validate to HTML 4 Strict DTD;
- designed the site to use a main style sheet plus one for printing (to not print the navigation menus).
Note: Almost all content is written by other members of the MNPS. My role is primarily to edit the content for spelling, grammar, brevity, and consistency.
