Howard County Hadassah is a chapter of our parent organization, Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc.
Hadassah is the largest women's and largest membership organization in the United States, with members in thirty-four countries around the world. Hadassah initiates and supports a number of health care, education, youth, humanitarian, and land development projects in Israel, such as:
- Hadassah Medical Organization, the most technically advanced medical center in the Middle East, where doctors, nurses, students, and patients - from all backgrounds and ethnicities in the region - come together for a common purpose: to heal all who are in need
- Hadassah College Jerusalem, which provides academic programs in a number of needed areas
- Youth Aliyah day centers and youth villages, which provide counseling, education, and support services to youth "at risk"
- Young Judaea, the oldest youth Zionist organization in America, reaching out to young Jews of all denominations
- Jewish National Fund, which has been instrumental in reforesting Israel. Current projects include restoring damage to forests burnt as a result of the recent war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as building water reservoirs.
- Merkaz HaMagshimim Hadassah, a combination absorption center and community center in Jerusalem
In the United States, Hadassah advocates for support of issues of concern to the organization at both the national and state levels, sponsoring Days on the Hill, where Hadassah advocates visit their representatives in the U.S. Congress, and Dates with the State, where Hadassah advocates visit their representatives in their states.
Hadassah also provides programming at the local and regional level for health awareness, Jewish education, and leadership development. Typical programs include:
- Book Clubs
- Family Programs, such as fun days for kids and parenting workshops
- Health Awareness programs
- Leadership Institutes and Workshops
- Mitzvah Day
- Study Groups
Hadassah is non-denominational, and welcomes Jewish women of all backgrounds.
Hadassah is also divided into Regions and Cooperatives, and the Howard County Chapter belongs to the Northern Seaboard Region and the SUN Cooperative.
